Yunfei Jiang's Timeless Design: Jining Sunac 1917 Art Museum

Reviving History Through Art and Architecture in a Modern, Minimalist Aesthetic

The design of the museum is inspired by the history of Shantui, a city with a rich cultural heritage. Jiang's design abandons traditional decoration and instead uses space to break down and reconstruct the city's history. The design technique, referred to as "deconstruction," extracts elements of Shantui's history and presents them in a contemporary context.

The unique properties of the design lie in its ability to extend the "thick volume of history" into a "brilliant legend of contemporary art." This is achieved through the use of the "Time Shuttle" device, which consists of 1917 colorful lines that materialize the shapes of light. The device connects memory with modern machinery, creating a space where time flows incessantly.

The museum, which covers an area of 1360 sqm, is designed to offer a unique spatial experience. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by "Time Casting," a space that integrates modern technology with the century-old history of Shantui. This creates a feeling of stepping into a time tunnel and embarking on a journey through time.

The project, which started in December 2021 in Beijing and was completed in April 2022 in Jining, faced several challenges. The tight timeline, the need to save costs, and the necessity to integrate local history and culture throughout the space were all hurdles that had to be overcome. Despite these challenges, the project was successful and was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023.
